How much life insurance do you need?

A calculator walks you through the pieces: how many income years to plan for, major debts, college funding, and what you've put aside or have through work.

Add up projected years of income, plus major debts, plus education costs, and subtract what you've already saved and any employer coverage. No formula is perfect, but term policies are sold in increments and the goal is a comfortable number, not a precise one.

Coverage estimate

$1,765,000

Amount = (annual income × years) + debts + education − savings and group coverage, rounded to the nearest $5,000. This is a starting point for comparison only, not financial guidance.

Why those inputs

Income duration. Typical is 10 to 20 years of income, but the right span is how long dependents need financial protection. Families in Hemet with small kids usually pick the longer options since costs for childcare, housing, and schools all peak at once.

Loans and bills. Mortgages top the list for most people. Coverage large enough to pay off the loan gives surviving family members the choice to stay in the home without a financial crisis.

College funding. Set aside a rough amount per child in today's money. It's easier to bundle this into the initial quote than to buy a separate policy later on.

Existing coverage. Money in savings that could support the family, plus workplace group insurance. Group plans usually end when employment does, so only count what you'd trust to still be there.

Once you know your target amount, use the quoting tool to compare costs across 10 to 30 year options from different carriers. Most people buy a bit more than their estimate because the monthly cost jump is small when you're young.
